After years of rumours and production delays, Noah Hawley’s long-awaited Alien: Earth has finally landed. For the first time in franchise history, the horror takes place right here on our planet. Streaming on Disney+ internationally and FX/Hulu in the US, the Fargo and Legion creator reimagines Ridley Scott’s universe as a corporate, near-future nightmare where humanity’s thirst for innovation might be its undoing.
Set around the year 2120, Alien: Earth explores a world ruled by rival biotech conglomerates such as Weyland-Yutani, Prodigy and Threshold. When a deep-space vessel crash-lands, it unleashes something terrifyingly familiar yet not quite what fans expect. At the centre of it all is Wendy (Sydney Chandler), a synthetic being implanted with a child’s consciousness. Her existence blurs the line between human empathy and machine logic. She is joined by Kirsh (Timothy Olyphant), her enigmatic mentor, and a sprawling ensemble that includes Essie Davis, Alex Lawther, Babou Ceesay and Adarsh Gourav.
Filmed primarily in Bangkok, production began in 2023 but was interrupted mid-shoot during the Hollywood strikes. Cameras rolled again in early 2024, with Hawley directing the opening episodes and long-time collaborators Dana Gonzales and Ugla Hauksdóttir taking over later chapters. Ridley Scott returns as executive producer through Scott Free, keeping a close eye on the legacy he started in 1979.
Across eight beautifully bleak episodes, Hawley blends his signature storytelling style - dense, stylish and morally ambiguous - with practical creature effects that make every corridor and containment lab feel tangibly unsafe. Critics have praised the show’s ambition and eerie atmosphere, calling it “cinematic in scale but uncomfortably intimate in terror.”
More than just another entry in the franchise, Alien: Earth asks what happens when humanity finally brings its monsters home. The result is part corporate thriller, part existential horror, and a fascinating expansion of the Alien mythos.
