In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, we continue our journey through the time travel subgenre by exploring two films where travelling through time becomes an adventure through history itself.
First we look at A Connecticut Yankee (1931), an early science-fiction comedy inspired by Mark Twain’s classic novel. The story follows a modern man who finds himself transported back to the court of King Arthur, bringing his modern knowledge into a medieval world.
Then we jump forward to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989), the cult sci-fi comedy about two California teenagers who travel through time in a phone booth collecting historical figures for their school history presentation.

A Connecticut Yankee (1931) – One of the Earliest Time Travel Adventures
Based on Mark Twain’s 1889 novel, A Connecticut Yankee is one of the earliest cinematic examples of a time-travel story.
The film follows a man from the modern era who is mysteriously transported to medieval England, where his knowledge of modern technology makes him appear almost magical to the people around him.
Stories like this helped establish a key time-travel trope: the modern outsider navigating the past, often using contemporary knowledge to influence historical events.
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) – History Class Through Time
Released nearly sixty years later, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure takes the idea of time travel and turns it into a joyful sci-fi comedy.
The story follows two teenage slackers who receive help from a mysterious visitor from the future. To pass their history class, they’re given access to a time machine disguised as a phone booth.
Their mission: travel through time and gather historical figures like Napoleon, Socrates and Joan of Arc to present at school.
The result is one of the most beloved sci-fi comedies of the 1980s and a perfect example of how time travel can turn history into a playful sci-fi adventure.
Time Travel as Historical Adventure
Together, A Connecticut Yankee and Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure show how time travel allows storytellers to interact with the past in creative ways.
Rather than simply observing history, these stories imagine what might happen if modern characters could step directly into historical events.
