Bust out your proton packs and grab that conch shell: we’re getting gloriously weird. In this Mad Science instalment, we dig into the blue-collar science of Ghostbusters (1984) and the gleefully meta lab experiment of The Cabin in the Woods (2012). From unlicensed nuclear accelerators to office drones preventing the apocalypse on a 9-to-5, we explore how science, the supernatural, and comedy collide. We also dive into SFX wizardry, franchise tangents, Dan Aykroyd’s spooky obsessions, and why a merman punchline still slaps.
“It’s the American dream: three scientists, a dodgy business loan, and a city overrun by ghosts.”

Ghostbusters (1984)
Director: Ivan Reitman
Writers: Dan Aykroyd & Harold Ramis
Producer: Ivan ReitmanStudio: Columbia Pictures

Ghostbusters follows three eccentric parapsychologists who lose their university funding and decide to start a private ghost-catching business in New York City. Using experimental technology — including proton packs and ghost traps — they capture paranormal entities and store them in a containment unit beneath their headquarters.
As supernatural activity escalates across the city, the Ghostbusters discover that a building designed by a cult leader is acting as a gateway for the ancient deity Gozer, whose arrival could trigger the apocalypse.
Released in 1984, the film became a huge cultural phenomenon and one of the most successful comedies of the decade, eventually earning around $370 million worldwide and spawning a long-running franchise.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Director: Drew Goddard
Writers: Drew Goddard & Joss Whedon
Producer: Joss Whedon
Studio: Lionsgate
Starring: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Fran Kranz
Release Year: 2011
The Cabin in the Woods begins like a classic horror movie: a group of college students travel to a remote cabin where they encounter terrifying supernatural forces.
But the film soon reveals a twist. The events at the cabin are secretly being controlled by a high-tech underground facility staffed by scientists and technicians who manipulate the environment and the characters’ behaviour.
Their goal is to stage elaborate ritual sacrifices designed to appease ancient cosmic gods buried beneath the Earth. If the ritual fails, the gods will awaken and destroy humanity.
The technicians use chemicals, surveillance systems and mechanical traps to guide the victims into familiar horror-movie scenarios, effectively turning supernatural terror into a carefully managed scientific operation.
Science Confronting the Unknown
Despite their very different tones, both films explore the same central theme: humanity’s attempt to rationalize the supernatural through science and technology.
In Ghostbusters, scientific ingenuity allows humans to capture and defeat paranormal forces.
In The Cabin in the Woods, science becomes part of a system designed to control ancient cosmic horrors.
Both stories suggest that even the most advanced scientific knowledge may not fully tame the mysteries lurking beyond human understanding.
