The modern blockbuster landscape has been dominated by superhero films, but some of the most imaginative recent examples of space opera storytelling have emerged from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, we explore two colourful cosmic adventures that helped expand the Marvel universe beyond Earth: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Both films blend superhero storytelling with classic space-opera elements — alien civilizations, galactic empires and interstellar battles — while embracing a tone of humour, spectacle and vibrant visual design.

We're thrilled to have Tiffani Angus, writer and half of the dynamic duo behind Spec Fic For Newbies joining us this week.

Together we plunge into the colourful world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, zeroing in on the space opera adventures of Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok.

We discuss growing superhero fatigue, the MCU's heyday and unravel how the unexpected directorial choices of James Gunn and Taika Waititi played a key role in shaping the Marvel comedy/action formula we know today.

Discussion Points from the Episode

In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, we explore:

  • how Marvel introduced space-opera storytelling into the MCU

  • the unique tone and humour of Guardians of the Galaxy

  • how Taika Waititi reinvented the Thor franchise with Ragnarok

  • why cosmic sci-fi stories work so well within the superhero genre

Producer: Kevin Feige

Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper

Guardians of the Galaxy introduced audiences to a team of unlikely heroes operating on the fringes of the Marvel universe. The story follows Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, a space adventurer who steals a mysterious orb and becomes the target of the powerful villain Ronan the Accuser.

To escape pursuit, Quill reluctantly teams up with a group of misfits including Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon and the tree-like creature Groot. Together they form the Guardians of the Galaxy and must stop Ronan from using the orb’s immense power to threaten the entire universe.

Released in 2014, the film became a major critical and commercial success, earning about $773 million worldwide and becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Director: Taika Waititi

Writers: Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle & Christopher Yost

Producer: Kevin Feige

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson

Release Year: 2017

Thor: Ragnarok is the third film in the Thor series and the seventeenth entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story follows Thor as he becomes stranded on the alien world Sakaar and must escape in time to stop the powerful villain Hela from destroying his home realm of Asgard.

The film also features the return of Bruce Banner / Hulk, leading to a gladiatorial showdown on Sakaar inspired by Marvel’s “Planet Hulk” storyline.

Released in 2017, Thor: Ragnarok became the most successful entry in the Thor franchise at the time, earning around $855 million worldwide and receiving strong critical praise for its humour and visual style.

The Rise of Marvel’s Cosmic Universe

Together, Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok demonstrate how the Marvel Cinematic Universe embraced the traditions of space opera storytelling.

Both films expand the scope of superhero cinema by introducing:

  • interstellar travel and alien civilizations

  • galactic conflicts involving powerful cosmic forces

  • teams of unconventional heroes operating beyond Earth

Their success proved that audiences were eager for large-scale cosmic adventures within the superhero genre.
