Cyberpunk Virtual Reality
In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, we continue our exploration of the virtual reality subgenre by diving into the world of cyberpunk.
Cyberpunk stories often imagine a near future where powerful corporations dominate society and advanced technologies blur the boundaries between human experience and digital systems.
Both of the films we’re discussing this week explore different sides of that idea: the storage and manipulation of digital information inside the human brain.
First we discuss Johnny Mnemonic (1995), the cyberpunk action film based on the short story by legendary sci-fi author William Gibson. The story takes place in a dystopian future dominated by megacorporations, where data courier Johnny carries highly sensitive information stored inside a cybernetic implant in his brain.
Then we explore Strange Days (1995), the techno-noir thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow. The film imagines a device known as SQUID, which records a person’s sensory experiences and allows others to replay them directly through their own minds.
Together these films show how cyberpunk cinema imagined a future where human experience itself becomes digital data.
Because here on Journey Through Sci-Fi, we explore the history of science-fiction cinema one subgenre at a time.

What We Discuss In This Episode
In this episode we talk about:
The rise of cyberpunk science fiction in the 1990s
William Gibson’s influence on digital-age sci-fi
Memory recording and sensory playback technology
The dark, dystopian worlds typical of cyberpunk stories
How these films predicted modern concerns about data, media and surveillance
Johnny Mnemonic (1995) – Data Stored in the Human Brain
Directed by Robert Longo and written by William Gibson, Johnny Mnemonic imagines a future where information has become the world’s most valuable commodity.
In this dystopian world, powerful corporations rely on data couriers who transport highly sensitive information inside cybernetic storage implants in their brains.
Keanu Reeves plays Johnny, a courier whose latest job requires him to carry far more data than his implant can safely store. If the information is not downloaded soon, it will overload his brain and kill him.
As Johnny tries to survive long enough to deliver the data, he becomes caught in a conspiracy involving megacorporations, underground hackers and rogue assassins.
The film embodies many classic cyberpunk ideas:
a networked digital society
powerful corporations controlling information
humans augmented with cybernetic technology.
Strange Days (1995) – Experiencing Someone Else’s Life
While Johnny Mnemonic explores digital information stored inside the brain, Strange Days focuses on technology that records human experience itself.
Set in Los Angeles on the eve of the year 2000, the film follows former police officer Lenny Nero, who deals in illegal recordings captured using a device called SQUID.
These recordings allow users to experience someone else’s memories — including their thoughts, emotions and physical sensations — as if they were their own.
The technology quickly becomes addictive, turning recorded experiences into a powerful underground drug.
The film blends cyberpunk sci-fi with film-noir storytelling, exploring themes such as voyeurism, technology and the exploitation of human experience.
Memory as Media
Both Johnny Mnemonic and Strange Days imagine a future where human thought and experience can be recorded, stored and traded like digital files.
In one film, the brain becomes a storage device for secret data.
In the other, memories themselves become a form of entertainment.
These ideas reflect one of cyberpunk’s central concerns: that technology might eventually turn human experience into just another form of information.
Continuing Our Journey Through Virtual Reality
This episode is part of our Journey Through Virtual Reality series, where we explore how science-fiction cinema has imagined simulated worlds, immersive technologies and digital identities.
From early cyberpunk visions to modern VR universes, these stories reveal how technology might reshape the way we experience reality itself.
