Artificial intelligence in sci-fi has always been about more than just circuits, code, and cold logic. Sometimes, it’s about heartbreak. Sometimes, it’s about fear. And sometimes… it’s about a lonely little trash-compacting robot who just wants to hold hands.

In this bonus compilation episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, we count down our Top 5 A.I. characters in film history - drawing on some of our favourite moments from the archive. These are the machines and programs that have stuck with us, made us question what it means to be human, and occasionally reduced us to a blubbering mess on the sofa.

From the quietly menacing HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey to the charming, chatty Samantha in Her, from the synthetic souls of Blade Runner to Pixar’s adorable eco-bot *WALL-E, these characters show the huge range of what “artificial intelligence” can mean on screen.

Why We Love A.I. in Sci-Fi

A great A.I. character makes us think about the limits of technology – and about ourselves. Are they our creations, our companions, our rivals… or our replacements? The best sci-fi doesn’t give easy answers, but instead makes us feel the contradictions: fear and awe, hope and despair, laughter and tears.

This countdown is a celebration of those contradictions. Whether they’re plotting humanity’s downfall or helping us plant the last seed on Earth, these A.I. characters have earned their place in cinema history.
