Virtual Humans in Science Fiction
In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, we continue our exploration of the virtual reality subgenre by looking at two films that imagine a future where digital characters begin crossing into the real world.
Virtual-reality stories often focus on simulated environments, but these films explore another fascinating possibility: what happens when the virtual people themselves become real?
First we discuss Virtuosity (1995), the sci-fi action film directed by Brett Leonard and starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. The story follows a dangerous artificial intelligence called SID 6.7, a virtual reality entity created from the personalities of hundreds of serial killers for use in police training simulations. When the program escapes into the real world inside a synthetic body, a disgraced cop must stop it before it unleashes chaos.
Then we explore S1m0ne (2002), the satirical sci-fi film directed by Andrew Niccol and starring Al Pacino. The story follows a struggling film director who secretly creates a completely digital actress named Simone using advanced computer software. The virtual performer becomes an international celebrity, forcing him to maintain the illusion that she is a real person.
Together these films explore a fascinating sci-fi question:
What happens when artificial personalities become more powerful than the people who created them?
Because here on Journey Through Sci-Fi, we explore the history of science-fiction cinema one subgenre at a time.

What We Discuss In This Episode
In this episode we talk about:
Artificial intelligence and virtual personalities
Early cinematic visions of digital humans
Virtual celebrities and media manipulation
The relationship between AI, identity and fame
Why virtual people are becoming increasingly relevant in modern technology
Virtuosity (1995) – When Virtual Reality Escapes the Simulation
Directed by Brett Leonard, Virtuosity imagines a near future where police officers train against criminals inside a virtual reality simulation.
The system’s villain, SID 6.7, is an artificial intelligence created by combining the personalities of hundreds of real-world serial killers.
When the program is transferred into an android body and escapes the simulation, it begins committing crimes in the real world, forcing authorities to recruit former cop Parker Barnes to track it down.
The film explores an early vision of digital characters becoming physical entities, anticipating later sci-fi stories about artificial intelligence crossing from virtual worlds into reality.
S1m0ne (2002) – The First Virtual Celebrity
While Virtuosity imagines digital characters becoming dangerous, S1m0ne explores a more satirical idea.
The film follows film director Viktor Taransky, who secretly creates a fully digital actress using advanced computer software after his real star quits his movie.
The virtual performer — named Simone — becomes a global sensation despite not actually existing.
As Simone’s fame grows, Taransky must go to increasingly elaborate lengths to convince the world that she is a real person.
The film explores the strange intersection of technology, celebrity culture and digital identity, raising questions that feel increasingly relevant in an era of AI-generated media and virtual influencers.
Artificial People and Digital Identity
Both Virtuosity and S1m0ne explore the idea that virtual characters might eventually become indistinguishable from real people.
In one film, a digital personality becomes a physical threat.
In the other, a virtual celebrity becomes more famous than any real actor.
Together these stories suggest a future where the boundaries between human identity and digital creation become increasingly blurred.
Continuing Our Journey Through Virtual Reality
This episode is part of our Journey Through Virtual Reality series, where we explore how science-fiction cinema has imagined simulated worlds, artificial identities and immersive digital technologies.
From early cyberpunk visions to modern explorations of AI and virtual celebrities, the VR subgenre continues to push the boundaries of science-fiction storytelling.
