In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, we continue our journey through dystopian cinema by exploring how science fiction imagines law enforcement in societies on the brink of collapse.

Both of the films we’re discussing this week centre on characters tasked with maintaining order in worlds where the social fabric is rapidly falling apart.

But while both stories explore dystopian futures, they present very different visions of justice and authority.

Mad Max (1979) – Society on the Brink

George Miller’s Mad Max presents one of the most influential dystopian worlds in science fiction.

Set in a near-future Australia where civilisation is beginning to collapse due to resource shortages and social breakdown, the film follows highway patrol officer Max Rockatansky, played by Mel Gibson.

As law and order deteriorate, violent biker gangs begin to dominate the roads while the remaining police force struggles to maintain control.

When Max’s family becomes the target of one of these gangs, the story transforms into a brutal revenge tale that reflects the collapse of traditional social order.

Although the later films in the franchise move into fully post-apocalyptic territory, the original Mad Max shows the moment when society begins to break down.

Dredd (2012) – Law in a Megacity

While Mad Max explores the collapse of civilisation, Dredd imagines a future where society survives — but only through an extreme system of law enforcement.

The film is set in Mega-City One, a vast dystopian metropolis stretching across the eastern United States, where crime is rampant and the population lives in enormous tower blocks.

In this world, order is maintained by Judges — law enforcement officers who act as judge, jury and executioner.

The story follows veteran Judge Dredd, who teams up with rookie Anderson to investigate a brutal crime inside a giant housing block controlled by a powerful drug gang.

As the Judges become trapped inside the building, the film transforms into a tense battle between law enforcement and criminal power.

Order vs Chaos

Although these films depict very different worlds, they explore similar dystopian themes.

In Mad Max, the police struggle to maintain control as society collapses around them.

In Dredd, the justice system has become so extreme that it grants law enforcement almost unlimited authority.

Together these films explore two different dystopian questions:

• What happens when society loses control completely?

• And what happens when maintaining order requires extreme power?
