Few science-fiction franchises have explored artificial intelligence as thoughtfully as Star Trek.

Across decades of storytelling, the series has repeatedly examined questions about machine consciousness, identity and the rights of artificial beings.

In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, hosts James and Matt delve into the Star Trek universe to explore two of the franchise’s most fascinating AI characters: Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager.

Through a selection of key episodes, we examine how these characters helped shape some of the most compelling stories about artificial intelligence ever told on television.

Because here on Journey Through Sci-Fi, we’re exploring the history of science-fiction storytelling one subgenre at a time.

What We Discuss In This Episode

In this episode we explore:

• The character of Data and the question of android personhood

• How Star Trek explores AI rights and machine consciousness

• The evolution of The Doctor from simple hologram to fully realised character

• Why Star Trek remains one of the most important franchises for exploring artificial intelligence

• How long-form television allows sci-fi to examine AI themes in depth

Data – Artificial Humanity in Star Trek: The Next Generation

Introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), the android Data quickly became one of the franchise’s most beloved characters.

Created by scientist Dr Noonien Soong, Data is an artificial lifeform striving to understand human emotion and behaviour.

While he possesses immense computational power, his journey is defined by a deeply human desire: to become more human himself.

The series frequently explores whether Data should be considered property or a sentient individual with rights.

Key Episodes Discussed

Star Trek: The Next Generation

• S02E09 – The Measure of a Man

A landmark episode exploring whether Data is a sentient being or Starfleet property.

• S03E16 – The Offspring

Data creates an android child, raising questions about artificial life and parenthood.

• S04E03 – Brothers

Data encounters his creator and the complexities of android identity.

The Doctor – Artificial Intelligence and Self-Awareness in Star Trek: Voyager

Introduced in Star Trek: Voyager (1995), the Emergency Medical Hologram — known simply as The Doctor — begins as a temporary medical program designed to assist the ship’s crew.

But over the course of the series, the hologram develops individuality, creativity and emotional complexity.

Unlike Data, The Doctor was never intended to become self-aware — which makes his gradual evolution into a fully realised personality even more compelling.

Key Episodes Discussed

Star Trek: Voyager

• S01E11 – Heroes and Demons

An early exploration of the Doctor’s expanding role beyond medical functions.

• S02E03 – Projections

The Doctor begins questioning the nature of his own reality.

• S05E11 – Latent Image

A powerful episode exploring memory, trauma and AI ethics.

• S06E04 – Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy

A lighter but revealing story about the Doctor imagining a life beyond his programming.
