Saving Humanity in Space
In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, we continue our journey through the space subgenre by exploring two films where humanity faces an existential crisis — and the only solution lies beyond Earth.
First we dive into Sunshine (2007), Danny Boyle’s intense sci-fi thriller about a desperate mission to reignite the dying Sun.
Then we jump forward to The Wandering Earth (2019), a spectacular Chinese science-fiction epic where humanity attempts something even more ambitious: moving the entire planet to safety.
Together these films show how science fiction imagines humanity confronting planetary catastrophe — and turning to space as the only possible escape.
Because here on Journey Through Sci-Fi, we explore the history of science-fiction cinema one subgenre at a time.

What We Discuss In This Episode
In this episode we talk about:
• How Sunshine blends psychological drama with a high-stakes space mission
• The influence of classic sci-fi films like 2001: A Space Odyssey
• The rise of large-scale Chinese science fiction with The Wandering Earth
• How sci-fi imagines humanity responding to global extinction threats
• Why saving Earth has become a major theme in modern space films
Sunshine (2007) – Restarting the Sun
Directed by Danny Boyle, Sunshine follows a crew of astronauts sent on a mission to restart the dying Sun using a massive nuclear payload.
As the crew travels deeper into space, the mission begins to take a psychological toll, raising questions about sacrifice, faith and the limits of human endurance.
The film combines the spectacle of space exploration with philosophical themes about humanity’s place in the universe.
The Wandering Earth (2019) – Moving the Planet
Released in 2019, The Wandering Earth presents one of the most ambitious concepts in science fiction.
Based on a novella by Liu Cixin, the film imagines a future where the Sun is expanding and humanity must move Earth out of the solar system using enormous planetary engines.
The result is a massive global effort to save the planet, blending disaster movie spectacle with large-scale science-fiction worldbuilding.
Humanity’s Survival in Space
Together, Sunshine and The Wandering Earth represent two very different visions of planetary survival.
One focuses on a small group of astronauts tasked with saving humanity.
The other imagines the entire planet working together to escape extinction.
Both reflect one of the most powerful ideas in science fiction: that humanity’s future may ultimately depend on our ability to leave Earth behind.
