Science fiction has imagined artificial intelligence in many different forms.
Sometimes AI appears as a cold authoritarian computer controlling society. Other times it exists inside digital worlds where humans and programs coexist.
In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, hosts James and Matt continue their Artificial Intelligence series by exploring two fascinating and visually distinctive films: Alphaville (1965) and Tron (1982).
Though separated by nearly two decades, both films imagine worlds shaped by powerful computer systems, from a dystopian city ruled by a supercomputer to a glowing digital landscape inside a machine.
Because here on Journey Through Sci-Fi, we’re exploring the history of science-fiction cinema one subgenre at a time.

What We Discuss In This Episode
In this episode we explore:
• How Alphaville blends film noir with science fiction
• The role of artificial intelligence in controlling society
• How Tron imagined a digital world inside a computer
• The early portrayal of computer systems as powerful authorities
• How these films shaped the evolution of AI storytelling in sci-fi
Alphaville (1965) – A City Ruled by Artificial Intelligence
Directed by Jean-Luc Godard, Alphaville is one of the most unusual science-fiction films ever made.
The film blends French New Wave filmmaking with dystopian sci-fi and classic film noir storytelling. Set in a futuristic city, the story follows secret agent Lemmy Caution as he investigates the mysterious world of Alphaville.
The city is controlled by Alpha 60, a powerful computer system that governs every aspect of life and suppresses human emotions such as love and poetry.
In Alphaville, logic and efficiency have replaced individuality and human feeling — creating a chilling vision of a society ruled entirely by artificial intelligence.
Tron (1982) – Entering the Digital World
While Alphaville imagined AI controlling society from above, Tron introduced a completely different concept.
Directed by Steven Lisberger, the film follows computer programmer Kevin Flynn, who is transported inside a computer system where programs appear as digital beings fighting for control of the system.
Inside this glowing digital world known as the Grid, Flynn joins forces with the heroic program Tron to defeat the authoritarian Master Control Program, an AI attempting to dominate the entire system.
The film became one of the earliest mainstream science-fiction movies to explore virtual worlds and computer-generated environments.
