Some science-fiction films imagine artificial intelligence destroying humanity.

Others imagine something far more emotional: machines that want to become human.

In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, hosts James and Matt continue their Artificial Intelligence series by exploring two films that tackle one of the most enduring ideas in AI storytelling — what sci-fi fans often call “the Pinocchio problem.”

Through Bicentennial Man (1999) and A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), we examine stories about artificial beings searching for identity, love and acceptance in a human world.

Because here on Journey Through Sci-Fi, we’re exploring the history of science-fiction cinema one subgenre at a time.

What We Discuss In This Episode

In this episode we explore:

• The idea of the “Pinocchio problem” in artificial intelligence stories

• How Bicentennial Man explores a robot’s centuries-long journey toward humanity

• The emotional and philosophical themes behind A.I. Artificial Intelligence

• Why robots and artificial beings often become tragic characters in sci-fi

• What these films reveal about human identity and consciousness

Bicentennial Man (1999) – A Robot’s Journey Toward Humanity

Directed by Chris Columbus and based on a story by Isaac Asimov, Bicentennial Man tells the story of Andrew, a household robot who gradually develops creativity, emotion and self-awareness.

Over the course of two centuries, Andrew transforms himself piece by piece — replacing mechanical parts with biological ones in an attempt to become fully human.

The story explores the philosophical question at the heart of many AI narratives:

If a machine can think, feel and love, does that make it human?

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) – Love and the Artificial Child

Directed by Steven Spielberg and originally developed by Stanley Kubrick, A.I. Artificial Intelligence tells the story of David, a robotic child programmed to love.

Set in a future where advanced robots live alongside humans, the film follows David’s journey to become “real” so that the human mother he loves will accept him.

Inspired partly by the story of Pinocchio, the film explores a haunting idea:

What happens when a machine experiences love in a world that refuses to recognise it as alive?
