By the late 1990s, science-fiction cinema had begun exploring a new frontier for artificial intelligence: the digital world.
Computers were rapidly becoming part of everyday life, the internet was expanding, and fears about technology — from hacking to the looming Y2K bug — were entering popular culture.
In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, hosts James and Matt continue their Artificial Intelligence series by exploring two of the most influential cyberpunk films ever made: Ghost in the Shell (1995) and The Matrix (1999).
Both films imagine futures where artificial intelligence, networks and digital systems reshape human identity itself.
Because here on Journey Through Sci-Fi, we’re exploring the history of science-fiction cinema one subgenre at a time.

What We Discuss In This Episode
In this episode we explore:
• The rise of cyberpunk science fiction in the 1990s
• How Ghost in the Shell explores identity and consciousness in a digital world
• The influence of cyberpunk on The Matrix
• Artificial intelligence and simulated reality
• How Y2K and internet culture shaped late-90s sci-fi
Ghost in the Shell (1995) – Artificial Identity in the Digital Age
Directed by Mamoru Oshii, Ghost in the Shell is one of the most influential cyberpunk films ever made.
Set in a technologically advanced future where cybernetic enhancements are common, the film follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg agent hunting a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master.
As the investigation unfolds, the story begins questioning the nature of consciousness itself.
If a human mind can exist within a fully cybernetic body, and if artificial intelligence can develop self-awareness, then the line between human and machine becomes increasingly blurred.
The film’s philosophical exploration of identity, memory and technology would become hugely influential within science fiction.
The Matrix (1999) – Artificial Intelligence and Simulated Reality
Just a few years later, The Matrix would bring many of these cyberpunk ideas into mainstream cinema.
Directed by The Wachowskis, the film imagines a future in which intelligent machines have taken control of the world and enslaved humanity inside a vast simulated reality.
Within this digital prison, humans unknowingly live their lives inside a computer-generated illusion.
At its heart, The Matrix explores a powerful sci-fi question: If reality itself can be simulated by machines, how can we ever know what is real?
The film combined cyberpunk philosophy with groundbreaking action and visual effects, becoming one of the most influential sci-fi films of the modern era.
