Silent Running (1972) – Robots and Environmental Loss
Directed by Douglas Trumbull, Silent Running is one of the earliest science-fiction films to centre environmental themes.
Set aboard a spacecraft carrying the last surviving forests of Earth, the story follows a botanist determined to protect the remaining plant life after humanity has abandoned nature.
Helping him are three small service robots — Huey, Dewey and Louie — who gradually become some of the film’s most sympathetic characters.
Though they are simple machines, their quiet loyalty and cooperation highlight one of sci-fi’s recurring ideas:
Sometimes machines behave more ethically than the humans who created them.
WALL-E (2008) – Artificial Intelligence and Environmental Hope
More than thirty years later, Pixar’s WALL-E would revisit similar themes for a new generation.
The film follows a small waste-collecting robot left alone on a polluted, abandoned Earth after humanity has fled the planet.
Over centuries of isolation, WALL-E develops curiosity, personality and emotion — becoming one of the most beloved robotic characters in science-fiction cinema.
When another robot named EVE arrives with a mission that could restore life to Earth, the story becomes both an environmental warning and an unexpectedly tender AI love story.
