Science-fiction stories about artificial intelligence often focus on machines turning against humanity.

But sometimes the most powerful AI stories are the ones where machines show more humanity than the humans who created them.

In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, hosts James and Matt continue their Artificial Intelligence series by exploring two science-fiction films that combine AI with environmental themes: Silent Running (1972) and WALL-E (2008).

Though made decades apart, both films imagine futures where humanity has lost its connection with the natural world, and where small, seemingly simple robots become the unlikely guardians of life on Earth.

Because here on Journey Through Sci-Fi, we’re exploring the history of science-fiction cinema one subgenre at a time.

What We Discuss In This Episode

In this episode we explore:

• How Silent Running (1972) blends environmentalism with science fiction

• The role of the film’s small maintenance robots Huey, Dewey and Louie

• How WALL-E (2008) reimagines the lonely robot story for modern audiences

• The rise of environmental themes in science-fiction storytelling

• Why robots often become the emotional centre of AI films

Silent Running (1972) – Robots and Environmental Loss

Directed by Douglas Trumbull, Silent Running is one of the earliest science-fiction films to centre environmental themes.

Set aboard a spacecraft carrying the last surviving forests of Earth, the story follows a botanist determined to protect the remaining plant life after humanity has abandoned nature.

Helping him are three small service robots — Huey, Dewey and Louie — who gradually become some of the film’s most sympathetic characters.

Though they are simple machines, their quiet loyalty and cooperation highlight one of sci-fi’s recurring ideas:

Sometimes machines behave more ethically than the humans who created them.

WALL-E (2008) – Artificial Intelligence and Environmental Hope

More than thirty years later, Pixar’s WALL-E would revisit similar themes for a new generation.

The film follows a small waste-collecting robot left alone on a polluted, abandoned Earth after humanity has fled the planet.

Over centuries of isolation, WALL-E develops curiosity, personality and emotion — becoming one of the most beloved robotic characters in science-fiction cinema.

When another robot named EVE arrives with a mission that could restore life to Earth, the story becomes both an environmental warning and an unexpectedly tender AI love story.
