The Terminator (1984) & Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Artificial Intelligence and the Rise of the Machines
Few science-fiction films have shaped the cultural image of artificial intelligence quite like The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
With their vision of a future ruled by a rogue AI known as Skynet, these films helped define one of sci-fi’s most enduring fears: the moment when humanity loses control of its own technology.
In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, hosts James and Matt continue their Artificial Intelligence series by exploring how James Cameron’s Terminator films transformed the idea of machine intelligence in science-fiction cinema.
From time-travelling cyborg assassins to a global AI war against humanity, these films introduced one of the most iconic “man vs machine” stories ever told.
Because here on Journey Through Sci-Fi, we’re exploring the history of science-fiction cinema one subgenre at a time.

What We Discuss In This Episode
In this episode we explore:
• How The Terminator (1984) introduced the idea of an AI-controlled future war
• The origins and concept of Skynet
• How Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) expanded the story of artificial intelligence
• The role of time travel in the Terminator mythos
• Why these films became defining examples of the “machines vs humanity” sci-fi story
The Terminator (1984) – The Birth of Skynet
Directed by James Cameron, The Terminator introduced one of the most famous AI concepts in science fiction.
In the film’s dystopian future, a military defence system called Skynet becomes self-aware and launches a nuclear attack on humanity — triggering a global war between humans and machines.
To ensure its victory, Skynet sends a cybernetic assassin back in time to eliminate the future leader of the human resistance.
The film combined AI apocalypse, time travel, and cyborg technology into a relentless sci-fi thriller that reshaped the genre.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) – The Evolution of Machine Intelligence
Seven years later, Terminator 2: Judgment Day would expand the story and deepen its exploration of artificial intelligence.
The film introduces the advanced T-1000, a shape-shifting machine made of liquid metal, while also reimagining the Terminator itself as a protector rather than a killer.
At the centre of the story is the looming moment known as Judgment Day, when Skynet becomes self-aware and humanity’s war with machines truly begins.
The film raises a central question that still defines AI stories today:
Can humanity prevent the future it creates through its own technology?
