Artificial intelligence stories often imagine machines replacing humanity.
But some of the most intriguing science-fiction films explore something far more intimate: what happens when humans begin forming emotional relationships with artificial intelligence.
In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, hosts James and Matt continue their Artificial Intelligence series by examining two modern films that explore synthetic humans and AI relationships: Uncanny (2015) and Zoe (2018).
Both films explore how advances in artificial intelligence could reshape human identity, romance and emotional connection.
Because here on Journey Through Sci-Fi, we’re exploring the history of science-fiction cinema one subgenre at a time

What We Discuss In This Episode
In this episode we explore:
• How Uncanny (2015) revisits the classic sci-fi idea of the Turing Test
• The psychological tension behind human-like androids
• How Zoe (2018) explores artificial intelligence and romantic relationships
• The ethical implications of synthetic humans designed for love
• Why modern AI stories increasingly focus on emotion and identity
Uncanny (2015) – The Turing Test and Artificial Humanity
Directed by Matthew Leutwyler, Uncanny tells the story of a journalist invited to interview a brilliant roboticist who claims to have built the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence.
Inside his laboratory lives Adam, an android so sophisticated that it may be impossible to distinguish him from a human being.
As the interview unfolds, the film explores classic science-fiction questions about artificial consciousness and identity.
At the centre of the story lies the Turing Test, a thought experiment asking whether a machine can demonstrate intelligence indistinguishable from human behaviour.
The film raises a central question within AI storytelling: If an artificial intelligence can perfectly imitate humanity, does the distinction between human and machine still matter?
Zoe (2018) – Artificial Love and Synthetic Humans
Directed by Drake Doremus, Zoe explores a future where artificial humans are created specifically to provide emotional companionship.
The story follows two scientists working on advanced synthetic partners designed to create stable romantic relationships.
But as the lines between creator, human and artificial being begin to blur, the characters are forced to confront uncomfortable questions about love, identity and authenticity.
The film explores an idea that has become increasingly common in modern science fiction: If artificial intelligence can replicate emotion and affection, can a relationship with a machine ever be truly real?
